Spend enough time in any major city and you’ll clock more Salomon XT-4s on sidewalks than you ever will on singletrack. That’s not a knock; few brands have managed the trail-to-streetwear crossover this gracefully, and the XT-4 OG (born in 2012 as an honest-to-goodness race shoe) is the silhouette that pulled it off. Now Salomon is reminding everyone where the shoe came from with the new XT-4 OG “Race Flag” Pack.
From Tongue Tab to Full Takeover
If you’ve ever flipped over the tongue on an XT-4, you’ve seen the Race Flag. It’s a small woven tricolor label that’s ridden along on the silhouette since the beginning. For this capsule, Salomon blew that little detail up into three full colorways, with “Lemon,” “Transcend Blue,” and “Fiery Red” each claiming one stripe of the flag.
The colors here actually mean something, too. Yellow stands for victory, blue for competitive drive, and red for the suffering it takes to get there. That last one might seem a bit harsh, but watch any alpine race finish and the theme checks out.
Each accent color washes over a metallic “Ftw Silver” and black base, and the effect is really rad. The silver carbon-weave texture gives all three pairs a speed-focused look that suits the racing theme far better than another earth-tone rehash would have.
Still a Race Shoe Underneath
Here’s the part that keeps the XT-4 OG interesting: none of the streetwear success has softened the underlying hardware. The anti-debris mesh upper gets wrapped in SensiFit film overlays that lock the foot down, while Salomon’s one-pull Quicklace system (with its tidy little lace garage) handles fastening duties.
Below deck, the full-length Agile Chassis Skeleton pairs with a dual-density EVA midsole for the stability that made this thing a legitimate racer in the first place. And the Mud Contagrip outsole remains as aggressive as ever, so the lugs will chew through actual terrain should your pair ever leave the pavement.
