Salomon Named Its Cracked-Leather Grolle Boot After French Slang for a Beat-Up Shoe

Every language has a word for the beat up old boots that we simply refuse to throw away. In French, that word is “grolle.” It’s old Parisian slang for a scuffed, well-loved shoe. So leave it to Paris concept shop The Broken Arm to stitch that exact idea onto a Salomon sole.

A decade into one of footwear’s most quietly consistent partnerships, the two French labels are back with their second ground-up silhouette of the year: the Salomon x The Broken Arm Grolle.

A Name That Tells You Everything

Borrowed from the Occitan grola (literally an old, worn-out shoe), the name landed in Parisian street slang over a century ago, and it describes the silhouette’s aesthetic perfectly here.

Where June’s SAVÁT riffed on humble countryside footwear, the Grolle digs deeper into The Broken Arm’s ongoing fascination with working-class rural youth. This time around, the brand draws on sociologist Nicolas Renahy’s Les Gars du Coin. The result is a mid-cut boot that’s less about the trailhead and more about the kid who wore the same pair through every season.

Cracked Straight From the Box

That story plays out in the leather material used for the shoe. The upper is cut almost entirely from one continuous panel, finished with an intentionally irregular, cracked coating that Salomon has left close to its raw state. Every crease and scuff you add will only deepen the effect over time.

The gorpcore giant’s signature Quicklace toggle is gone, too. In its place sit old-school laces (white installed, a spare black set in the box) running through embroidered eyelets and metal hardware. It’s also joined by a buckle, exposed contrast stitching, and a lone floral embroidery on the tongue.

Still a Salomon Underneath

Flip it over, though, and the Salomon DNA is unmistakable. A brushed rubber mudguard wraps the forefoot before flowing into a bottom unit pulled from Salomon’s outdoor archive. It’s capped off by a deep-lugged Mud Contagrip outsole built for soft, sloppy terrain.

At just 14 ounces per shoe with an 11mm drop, it wears far lighter than it looks. Each pair even ships with a drawstring storage bag.
