Last November, Oakley had grown adults lining up outside its Shibuya store at 8:30 in the morning for a chance to buy sunglasses. The occasion was the long-awaited return of the X-Metal Juliet, and we assumed the circus packed up once those pairs found homes.
Not quite. The frames Oakley built while perfecting that reissue are now getting a drop of their own, dubbed the MUZM X-Metal Juliet Prototype.

Selling the Homework
Every product you’ve ever owned had rougher drafts, and those drafts almost never leave the building. They live in drawers, get raided for parts, or quietly meet the shredder. Oakley went a different route with the Juliet’s development frames, serializing them and shipping them off to its flagship stores instead.
According to the brand, these pre-production pieces were created while engineering last year’s MUZM Juliet reissue and were never intended for public sale. Each 3D-printed X-Metal titanium frame carries the model’s full hardware loadout, including the Flex Coupler, Temple Shocks, and interchangeable Nosebomb nose pads, with Plutonite Prizm Ruby Polarized lenses shaped to preserve XYZ Optics geometry.

Why Anyone Cares About a 27-Year-Old Sunglass
For the uninitiated, the Juliet arrived in 1999 under Oakley’s X-Metal program, Jim Jannard’s crusade to build eyewear from sculpted titanium while the rest of the industry was content with injection-molded plastic. Cyclops wore a pair in the first X-Men movie. Michael Jordan wore them in real life, which is arguably even cooler.
Oakley killed off the entire X-Metal line in 2012, and clean secondhand Juliets have commanded silly money ever since. That pent-up demand is precisely why last year’s reissue required a lottery, and why this follow-up will be even harder to land.

First, a Pop Quiz
The Prototype is touching down at just five Oakley flagship stores worldwide, with Shibuya serving as the lone Asian outpost via an in-store lottery on July 24. London’s Covent Garden location already ran its allocation, which was reportedly just three pairs, through a lucky draw earlier this week.
And Oakley isn’t letting just anyone in. Entering the Shibuya lottery means showing up wearing Oakley eyewear, holding a Members Club account, and answering staff questions about the brand and the Juliet on the spot. Yes, there’s a verbal exam to buy sunglasses. Flunk it and you’re going home empty handed, though considering what the last drop fetched on resale, we understand the gatekeeping.
