Merrell’s Harris Tweed Collection Puts Hand-Loomed Hebridean Wool Over Vibram Lugs

Merrell has spent decades perfecting their hiking shoes, and we think it’s safe to say that the Jungle Moc has essentially become its own food group in dad footwear. Harris Tweed, meanwhile, has spent over a century as the most fiercely guarded cloth on Earth. On paper these two have nothing in common, and yet here we are, staring down the new Merrell x Harris Tweed collection.

The Only Fabric With Its Own Act of Parliament

Harris Tweed isn’t just a pattern, it’s actually a legal definition. Every inch must be handwoven on a treadle loom in a weaver’s own home in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. And it must be woven from pure virgin wool dyed and spun on the islands.

The Harris Tweed Act of 1993 enshrined all of that, and it makes it the only fabric anywhere protected by its own Act of Parliament.

Four Icons Dipped in Dark Walnut

The collection covers four silhouettes in a single Dark Walnut colorway. You get the Jungle Moc, the open-backed Moab 2 Slide, the trail-ready Cham Redux, and the Relay Lace.

Rich brown leather frames the handwoven panels on every pair, letting the multi-tonal weave handle the visual heavy lifting. And each tongue wears the official Orb label, which is the stamp the Harris Tweed Authority presses onto every certified length of cloth.

Still Merrells Underneath

Thankfully, the brands decided not to turn these into precious shelf pieces. The slide keeps its grippy Vibram TC5+ outsole, the Cham Redux pairs a cushy FloatMax foam midsole with toggle lacing, and the Jungle Moc hangs onto its trusty Air Cushion heel.

The Relay rounds out the affair as the cleanest sneaker of the bunch, blending full-grain leather with the tweed at a featherweight 9.7 ounces per shoe. Our favorite, though, is the Moab 2 Slide, where a chunky lugged sole under hand-loomed wool sums up the entire collaboration in one shoe.
