Jacques Marie Mage built an entire luxury empire on being unapologetically chunky. While the rest of the eyewear world chased thinner and lighter, the LA-based brand carved its frames from slabs of acetate up to 12mm thick, shaping each one in Japan through hundreds of handcrafted steps.
That devotion to doing things the hard way earned JMM a genuine collector following, and now the brand is bringing it to a material famous for disappearing on your face with the new Ti Series, headlined by the Dealan Ti.
The Dylan Frame Goes Metal
If you know one JMM frame, it’s the Dealan. Introduced back in 2015, the subtle cat-eye silhouette pays homage to the black spectacles Bob Dylan wore all over the world in the mid-’60s, and it’s been the brand’s calling card ever since.
Reworking your most iconic design in a completely different material is a risky move, to put it lightly. But the Dealan Ti keeps the attitude fully intact, right down to the signature arrowhead front-pins and hairline-engraved embellishments across the bridge and frame-ends.
A 700-Ton Origin Story
Now, about that construction. Titanium eyewear is nothing new, but it’s almost always thin, springy, and borderline invisible. JMM wanted its titanium to look sculptural, which meant starting from a 6mm-thick sheet of Grade 6 beta titanium, something no one in the industry had ever pulled off. Japan’s manufacturers previously topped out at 5mm.
Getting past that ceiling required a one-of-a-kind 700-ton press, followed by 5-axis precision milling, hand-polishing, and two-tone metal plating. The whole program took more than three years to develop.
Squint at the Details
Each frame pairs that titanium front with matching titanium temples that transition into double-laminated acetate tips, plus custom monoblock hinges and octagonal titanium nose pads. The lenses are Armorlite 4-base units with backside anti-reflective treatment.
The Dealan Ti arrives in three colorways, from silvery Galaxy with powder blue lenses to the gilded Aurum with Darjeeling tint. And if the Dealan isn’t your silhouette, the Zephirin and Torino got the same titanium treatment.
