The adidas Y-3 silhouettes are known for their distinct looks and unique design choices, and we’re seeing more iterations inspired by outdoor escapades, like the Y-3 TERREX Swift R3 GTX shoes the sub-label just dropped. Y-3 is back yet again with a unique take on adidas’ Adizero athletic shoes, bringing us the Y-3 Ultraboost Light, Y-3 Runner 4D FWD, Y-3 Boston 11, and Y-3 Takumi Sen 9.
Taking inspiration from previous adidas running shoe releases, all four of Y-3’s iterations feature many functions from the adidas Adizero line, like the Lighstrike cushioning and adidas’ ENERGYRODS 2.0. These materials provide the wearer with a comfortable cushion with high energy return to keep things moving. The firmness and stability we’ve come to expect from the Adzero releases are also included in each shoe.
As for the stylistic choices, these adidas runners have a black base, featured in all the shoes in this collection, along with the classic three-stripes in a brush-stroke-inspired design. The deep black punctuated by the spray-paint-esque stripes is very much in line with the avant-garde style that Y-3, AKA adidas and Yohji Yamamoto, is known for. For example, the Stretchweb rubber outsole on the Y-3 Runner 4D FWD gives the silhouette an interesting and broad base while providing the necessary traction for runs. On the side of each shoe, Yohji Yamamoto’s signature is written in white, matching the stripes. Alongside some other clothing releases, this new crop of Y-3 running shoes shows that the label is keen to expand its repertoire. And if that means more releases like this, then the future sure is looking good.
