The Samba has been the sneaker for what feels like a decade running. It transcended the fashion-sneaker tier years ago and somehow has become everywhere sneaker. You can’t throw a rock without hitting a dozen people wearing these things in a crowded urban environment. But, love it or hate it, there’s no denying its grip on the culture.
Now Adidas is taking a flier on the next logical move, chopping the back off entirely and calling it the Samba Mule. The whole thing arrives for Summer 2026 in three colorways, and depending on where you stand, it’s either a clever summer pivot or the moment the Samba officially jumps the shark.
Riding the Mule Wave
The timing here isn’t accidental by any means. Mules have been quietly eating the casual footwear world for the past couple of years, fueled largely by the Birkenstock Boston getting absolutely engulfed by the tween-to-twenty-something pipeline. Loafers had their moment in 2022 (loafers are still always a good choice), mules are having theirs now, and Adidas clearly looked at the trendline and decided the Samba should get in on it.
The cynical read here? It definitely feels like a cash grab. And perhaps the other end of that spectrum is that the Samba is a classic that has been refreshed dozens of times since 1950. I think we can safely say that both are probably true.
Three Builds, Three Vibes
The opening run gives us three colorways, each playing the mule conversion a little differently. The “Off White/Preloved Brown” pair (HP5050) is the cleanest of the bunch, pairing a leather base with breathable mesh side panels and contrasting brown suede on the Three Stripes and heel. We imagine this will be the colorway getting the most attention this summer.
The “Beige” version (HP5051) keeps that same mesh-and-leather formula in a softer, sandier tone, while the “Navy” (HP5053) take a bit of a different approach. It features suede on the toe alongside leather sides and a woven knit for the Three Stripe branding.
