While most iconic sneakers have their roots in the ’80s or ’90s, the adidas Samba has a history dating all the way back to 1949. However, it wasn’t until the Wales Bonner collab in 2020 that these soccer shoes made the jump to fashion statement.
With its latest variant, adidas has gone lone-wolf, turning its terrace sneaker into a sort of “casual” dress shoe, and it’s never looked sleeker.
Freizeit: German for “We’re Not Messing Around”
If you know adidas even casually, you know the brand loves a loaded name. “Freizeit” translates from German as “leisure time,” and that single word does a lot of heavy lifting here. The shoe has physically been rethought from the ground up to back that claim. The upper ditches the standard smooth leather in favor of a plush, pebbled grain you could actually wear to a wedding dinner. The classic T-toe suede overlay stays put, but everything around it has been elevated a few tax brackets.
Branding is dialed back accordingly. The gold embossing near the three stripes that’s been a Samba signature is now gone. The tongue gets a debossed, all-black treatment that keeps the monochrome theme intact. The only flash of gold is on the insole. From afar, you might not even know that these were Sambas to begin with.
The Sole Situation
The Freizeit doesn’t just update the upper but rethinks the foundation entirely. Out goes the slim, traditional Samba outsole. In comes a chunkier, lugged rubber bottom with deeper tread. It’s a bolder profile than what Samba loyalists are used to, but it looks amazing. The added height and grip give the shoe a ruggedness that contrasts well against the refined upper, and it puts the Lux Freizeit closer in spirit to a country brogue than a terrace trainer.
This isn’t the first time adidas has taken the Freizeit approach. The Stan Smith Freizeit dropped a few months back with the same sole unit and polished leather treatment. Consider the Samba version the follow-up that arguably has more cultural cachet to work with.
