The Evo SL began as a training shoe and very quickly turned into a lifestyle one, the rare performance runner people buy as much for the look as the mileage. So a zipper makes a strange kind of sense here. And adidas did just that, dropping the Adizero Evo SL Zip, which runs a tongue-length zip straight down the midfoot and leans all the way into the shoe’s double life.

A Track Spike From the Archives
adidas pulled the inspiration from the Demolisher, an early-2000s sprint spike with a zippered upper that Maurice Greene wore during the 2004 Athens Olympics.

That is a deep cut, and one we’re certainly on board with. The era it nods to was peak three stripes on the track, which only sharpens the appeal.

Function or Fashion?
While this is mostly an aesthetic upgrade, adidas frames the zip as a lockdown upgrade. The shroud closes over the standard lacing and a gusseted tongue, cinching the midfoot without piling on weight. And small perforations across the upper keep things breathable.

Now, let’s be honest here as well. The laces underneath are still doing most of the structural work, which makes the zipper as much about the race-day silhouette as the fit. Most brands chasing better lockdown reach for BOA dials and speed-lace gadgetry, so a zipper is a refreshingly analog answer, even if it is half styling exercise.

Same Foam, Same Sticker
Underneath, nothing changed with thee shoe. The Evo SL Zip keeps the full-length Lightstrike Pro midsole, the same foam adidas packs into top-shelf marathon racers like the Adios Pro Evo 3.
That has always been the Evo SL’s MO – race-grade cushioning at an everyday price, with no aggressive carbon plate dictating your stride. The Zip stacks 38mm at the heel and 32mm up front for a 6mm drop, and tips the scales at a feathery 230 grams in a men’s pair. Spec for spec it mirrors the Evo SL Exo.
