Since being founded in 1983, the Leatherman brand has been the undisputed leader in the multi-tool space, with the company steadily unveiling an ever-growing catalog of highly-capable multi-tools that are primarily characterized by their innovative designs and the immense utility that said designs afford. Back in February of last year, the Portland-based multi-tool purveyor opted to lean further into its key defining traits with the debut of its Garage innovation hub — a special in-house division focusing exclusively on envelope-pushing, small-batch, limited edition multi-tools. And with 2023 marking the brand’s fourth decade in operation, it’s decided to mark the occasion with its fifth addition to the Garage lineup, dubbed the Leatherman Garage Batch #005 40th Anniversary Tool.

Based on Leatherman’s own proprietary FREE multi-tool platform — the same butterfly-opening design that the FREE P2 and FREE P4 are built on — the  Garage Batch #005 40th Anniversary model is a 20-function multi-tool that weighs in at only 8.65oz and spans just 4.25” when closed. Assembled, tensioned, and sharpened entirely by hand in Portland, the Garage Batch #005 multi-tool sports a handle with a white Cerakote finish that’s contrasted via a burnt bronze Cerakoted pocket clip and main blade. Tools on this limited edition model include a set of hard wire-cutters, an electrical crimper, adjustable spring-action needle nose and regular pliers, spring-action scissors, a package opener, an awl, can and bottle openers, a wood and metal file, an edge file, a wood saw, a pry tool, and large and small bit drivers with replaceable bits.

Additionally, the bottom of the multi-tool has also been capped off with a rugged impact surface. A major part of what makes this limited edition release so special, however, is its primary blade. Boasting a 2.80” length and a sheepsfoot profile with a plain edge, this Cerakote-finished blade is composed of Crucible Industries’ American-made CPM MagnaCut blade steel — marking Leatherman’s first-ever use of this revolutionary blade steel. What’s more, this blade is not only 20% thicker than Leatherman’s standard blades, but it’s also deployed using an all-new thumb-stud setup — marking yet another first for a Leatherman multi-tool. The multi-tool spans a total of 6.5” with its primary blade deployed, too.

Limited to only 1,983 units worldwide — a nod to the year that Leatherman was founded — the Leatherman Garage Batch #005 40th Anniversary Tool will be available for purchase starting July 5th. And, while pricing has yet to be announced, based on the prior Leatherman Garage drops, we anticipate the 40th Anniversary multi-tool to sell out within hours, if not minutes.
