Yamaha’s Yard Built Program taps prominent custom bike builders to transform new production models into one-off works in a bid to demonstrate its two-wheelers’ ample potential for customization. As such, the program tends to result in builds that are designed to inspire replication and could be mimicked without spending a fortune — an area furthered by the fact that builders aren’t permitted to modify the donor’s main chassis. For these reasons, we were particularly taken aback the incredibly elaborate and involved XSR 155 build recently completed by Indonesia’s PapnMam Modified.
Known simply as the “Modern Flat Track Concept,” the project’s moniker is a bit of a misnomer, as the build’s design language falls squarely into the futuristic category — to put it mildly. The Yamaha donor has been treated to origami-esque winglet-style radiator shrouds that encompass the tank and are balanced out by a matching belly-pan piece and a waspish custom tail section that sports a pair of under-seat exhaust pipes set in a custom surround. Alongside the winglet pieces, the build’s most striking feature is probably its thoroughly futuristic take on a tracker-style front number plate — a custom metal unit that features a headlight hidden behind a pivoting cover. Other details rounding out the futuristic project are a set of tracker bars fitted with circular drop-down mirrors, one-off fork guards, and custom aero disc covers. The build is so transformative that, aside from the engine and the XSR’s signature perforated side-plate, the small-displacement donor bike is completely unrecognizable.
While the project represents a change of pace for the Yard Built Program, it also demonstrates the immense skill and creativity displayed by PapnMam Modified. And, though shown here in render form — courtesy of RAXE97NINETYSEVEN — the tracker concept has since been brought to fruition in steel and metal.
