Over the last decade or so, interest in off-roading and overlanding has massively spiked. In response to this influx in popularity, automakers have been rolling out off-road-capable turnkey models as well as releasing ruggedized concept cars to demonstrate their respective vehicles’ potential as a go-anywhere rig. And the latest marque to do so is Volkswagen, which has just revealed a rally-inspired one-off concept car based on the brand’s new ID.4 electric SUV.
Christened the ID. XTREME, this conceptual off-roader is based on the high-performance GTX-spec of VW’s ID.4 model, though the donor vehicle has been heavily modified for all-terrain use. The team at VW have treated the fully electric all-wheel drive vehicle to a set of 18″ OZ Racing off-road wheels shod in all-terrain rubber, a lifted suspension package, 3D-printed wings that are 2” wider, a modified crash member paired with a custom front bumper, a full-length aluminum skid plate, and a one-off roof rack with integrated LED lighting.
What’s more, the use of a high-performance drive on the rear axle coupled with various software tweaks have also allowed the team at VW to up the ID.4 GTX’s power from 65kW (87hp) to a much more impressive 285kW (382hp). The interior of the car was also tweaked and now features Alcantara upholstery and redesigned seats. Further distinguishing the one-off concept from the regular ID.4 GTX is a bespoke livery white, orange, and gray livery.
While we don’t anticipate Volkswagen ever putting this concept into production, we wouldn’t be too surprised if the company began offering some of the features and upgrades on the ID. EXTREME as optional add-ons.
