With a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 putting down over 620hp, the Maserati MC20 is already one of the most capable vehicles on the planet. And while the MC20 is heavily-track-focused, it was still ultimately designed for on-road use. The same, however, can’t be said about the Trident firm’s all-new GT2 race car, which takes the brand’s MC20 supercar and turns it into a spare-no-expense factory-built race car.
Following a shakedown reveal back in March, the fully-unveiled version of the Maserati GT2 is kicked along by the same Nettuno V6 engine as the base model MC20, though the rest of the car has been heavily modified for competition. Competing in the Fanatec GT2 European Series, the Maserati GT2, the Maserati GT2 sports a completely revised aero kit engineered specifically for on-track use, that includes a massive front splitter, and equally large rear diffuser, a pair of side wings and side skirts, and a huge adjustable rear wing.
The entire vehicle is constructed around the same carbon fiber chassis that’s been pried with a double-wishbone suspension setup fore and aft that’s markedly tighter than the units found on the road-going MC20. Six-pot calipers have also been brought into the mix along with a six-speed sequential transmission. The outside of the vehicle has also been adorned in a classic Maserati blue livery while its interior has been fully gutted, fitted with a roll-cage, an LM-style steering wheel, and race seats with multi-point harnesses — all of which is of the FIA-approved variety. Interestingly, despite the weight that it adds, this GT2 class racer still features an air conditioning system.
Maserati’s MC20-based GT2 class race car just made its official public debut at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium. While the Maserati GT2 is undeniably a very competent race vehicle, it should be interesting to see how the vehicle stacks up against the rest of the factory-backed competition participating in the GT2 Euro Series.
