Mammoth’s First Rooftop Tent Is an Aluminum Monocoque Shelter Built Like an Airplane

When the folks at Mammoth Overland first showed up to Overland Expo West back in May with their SKL concept, they were asking a pretty direct question: what if a rooftop tent could borrow from trailer design instead of just being fabric stretched over a frame? Now, six months later, that concept has turned into a production unit ready for market. And the answer to their question is sitting right on top of your rig, ready to deploy in 30 seconds flat.

Aerospace Meets the Roof Rack

If you’re already familiar with Mammoth’s trailer lineup — the HV, the Tall Boy, and their other off-grid heavy-hitters — then you might know about their aviation history Vashon Aircraft. They were been building planes in Woodinville, Washington and decided to apply that same riveted aluminum monocoque construction to overlanding. The SKL is their first rooftop product, but it’s built with the same all-aluminum approach that made their trailers nearly indestructible. At 300lbs and sporting an R5 insulation rating, this thing is about as far from a canvas tent as you can get while still calling it a rooftop shelter.

Room to Actually Sleep

A huge improvement over the prototype, the redesigned front door folds up from the floor now, shaving setup down to half a minute. Inside, you’re looking at a king-length sleeping area with a width that splits the difference between a queen and a full. That’s enough space for two adults without anyone getting elbowed in the ribs. Six porthole windows (a Mammoth signature) flood the interior with natural light during the day, while dual LED strips are in place for nighttime. A three-speed bi-directional electric fan keeps air moving inside and everything runs off a standard 6Ah Renogy battery pack. If you’re planning longer trips, you can upgrade to a 104Ah or 208Ah setup, and the whole system comes pre-wired for solar. The stowed height sits at 18″, but that’s not egregious considering some other hard-sided offerings.

Tough Enough to Trust

The all-aluminum shell isn’t just about weight savings but durability in conditions where fabric would get shredded or soaked through. With the R5 insulation sandwiched between the inner and outer skins, you’re covered for four-season use without condensation or cold getting in. The optional roof rack can handle 500lbs of gear (static), which is more than 1.5x the SKL’s base weight. Two auxiliary flood lights mount to either side for trail or camp illumination, powered by that same integrated battery system.
