Southern California-based restomod outfit Gunther Werx is a perennial favorite of Porsche drivers and enthusiasts for its in-depth builds that accentuate the very best of the German automaker’s craft. Its flagship 911 kits have harnessed the essence of the air-cooled vehicles, which were produced between 1964 and ‘98, where they reached the end of the line with the 993 series.
Debuting at Monterey Car Week this past weekend, Gunther Werx’s Project Tornado takes an air-cooled 993 and applies a carbon fiber body to the exterior — among other things. The upgrade takes 500lbs off the original weight, which was well over 3,000lbs, better optimizing the new Rothsport Racing 4.0L twin-turbo engine (the standard engines on the 993 were between 3.6 and 3.8) with a six-speed manual transmission, putting out a tremendous 700hp and more than 560lb-ft of torque with track mode.
The carbon fiber body also helps maximize downforce efficiency with several unique components such as a dual bubble sculpted roof panel, front vented hood with scoop down, vented fenders and rear quarter panels, larger intake openings in front, and an open mesh rear bumper. On the inside are hollow carbon fiber bucket seats that sport bespoke seat cushions tailored upon commission, a carbon fiber steering wheel with integrated controls for the track mode edition, and an upgraded state-of-the-art center console that supports smart devices.
Other customization options will be available upon purchase. No price has been given as of yet, but like Gunther Werx’s other mods, the Project Tornado Porsche 993 will be limited to just 25 examples.
