Ferrari spent last year reminding everyone the Testarossa name still matters (not that we really needed a reminder), pinning it to a 1,050-hp hybrid flagship. But for anyone who grew up staring at the poster, the real deal will always be a flat-12 wedge with those iconic cheese-grater strakes. Irvine’s Boden Autohaus, the SoCal outfit best known for crafting titanium exhausts for everything from Enzos to Pagani Zondas, clearly feels the same way. And to prove it, the shop just unveiled its most menacing tribute yet with this matte black Ferrari 512 TR.

Vice Versa
Unfortunately, pop culture never really let the Testarossa wear black. Miami Vice famously ran its hero cars in white because dark bodywork got lost in the show’s neon-soaked night shoots. And nearly every bedroom wall since has been some shade of Rosso Corsa.

That history is probably why this thing hits so hard. The donor is a 512 TR, which is the comprehensively re-engineered evolution that bowed at the 1992 LA Auto Show. It features a stiffer chassis, bigger rolling stock, and a flat-12 massaged to 428 horsepower.
Ferrari built fewer than 2,300 of them before production wrapped in 1994, and clean examples now trade deep into six-figure territory. Put simply, nobody blacks one of these out on a whim.

Shadow Work, Strake to Strake
Boden has spent over a decade earning the trust of Maranello’s clientele, so the execution here is predictably dialed. The entire wedge has been drenched in a matte black wrap (strakes and all), leaving the yellow Cavallino shields as the lone contrast in all that darkness.

Below the beltline sit 19-inch HRE 501 FMR wheels, their satin black mesh centers and gloss black lips riffing on the period basketweaves of the era. Nitron R1 coilovers handle the slam, while a front axle lift spares the chin on the way into Cars & Coffee.

The Flat-12 Gets the Last Word
Peer through that mesh and you’ll catch the build’s only other flash of color (the gold calipers of an Endless big brake kit). It’s a serious hardware bump over 30-year-old stock stoppers.

As for the 4.9-liter flat-12? Boden wisely left all 428 horses alone, bolting up a Capristo exhaust so the twelve sings that much louder on its climb to redline. The gated five-speed and black leather cabin remain untouched.

Boden Autohaus hasn’t published a price for this one, as it’s a showcase build living in the shop’s gallery rather than a listing. That said, the Irvine crew takes commissions year-round, so if a blacked-out flat-12 of your own sounds appealing, a quote request through their site is the move.
