This Pininfarina-Designed Towable Trailer Expands into a Luxury Apartment

As luxury RVs close in on the price of literal houses (in some parts of the U.S. at least), each new release feels like it’s aiming to give us at least one or two features we’ve never seen before.

Launched in 2021, California-based startup AC Future has been leveraging AI in a way no one else has so far. Blending the idea of off-the-grid mobility with a livable small home, the company has been partnering with legendary coachbuilder Pininfarina for a couple of years now on its Transformable Home units. Joining the stationary AI-THu and the drivable AI-THd, the new futuristic AI-THt is AC’s first-ever towable trailer.

Expansion on Steroids

The thing that separates AC Future’s approach from your standard RV slide-out is the sheer ambition of it. It travels as a 24-foot trailer but then transforms into a 38-foot behemoth, expanding from 150sq.ft inside to over 360sq.ft. The front section slides out and over the tongue, both sides deploy outward, and suddenly you’ve got what feels more like an apartment than a camper. You even have a suspended terrace platform up front for, say, drinking your morning coffee, and the whole thing deploys in minutes through AC’s patented expansion system. Where most towables give you one or two slide-outs, the AI-THt reconfigures itself on all four sides.

Pininfarina’s Touch

Having the Italian design house behind this gives the AI-THt a visual edge over other boxy trailers on the market. The exterior is both architecturally-inspired and aerodynamic, though we’re curious to see how those sleek lines translate to real-world towing. Inside, the renders show a residential-grade kitchen, a main bedroom, an office space, and a full bathroom, all styled with Italian-inspired finishes. The modular furniture system allows pieces to fold away when the unit contracts for travel.

Off-Grid Capabilities

In terms of technical features, the AI-THt packs a high-voltage battery system (up to 100 kWh), a substantial solar array generating 25 kW, water recovery technology, and atmospheric water generation. It can charge your EV, provide backup power to your home, and supposedly manage resources intelligently through its AI-driven system. The trailer also features tow-assist capability and auto-hitch functionality, which should ease the burden on your tow vehicle.

The dual-zone climate control, residential appliances, and Starlink connectivity push this firmly into the luxury category. If you want the ultimate solution for off-grid escapes, this might very well be it.
