Jaguar hasn’t sold anybody a new car in nearly a year. And in that time, the brand has killed off its entire lineup, dropped a 30-second rebrand film that racked up some two billion impressions (and arguably twice as many hot takes), and teased the pink Type 00 concept while the internet debated whether the Leaper was dead. Now the production car has finally landed in New York, and it’s called the Jaguar Type 01.

Life After “Copy Nothing”
Now, let’s be clear about what the stakes are here for the brand. This isn’t a halo car sitting atop a healthy lineup. This is the first product of a Jaguar that abandoned sub-$70K volume sales to chase Bentley money, and they have no combustion models to fall back on either.

And Jaguar knows exactly how divisive it is at the moment. The brand ran the design past 2,500 people in customer clinics, where it just so happen to score more nines and tens than any Jaguar ever measured. It also scored more ones and twos as well. That polarization appears to be whole strategy though, and roughly 50,000 people have already registered interest.

1,015 Horses, Zero Interest in Drag Racing
Underneath sits the new Jaguar Electric Architecture, where a tri-motor setup (one up front, two out back with torque vectoring) churns out an absurd 1,015 horsepower and 1,006 lb-ft of torque. That setup is good for a 3.1-second sprint to 60.

Jaguar’s engineers admit they never set a 0-60 target, instead tuning the powertrain for rolling shove between roughly 62 and 112 mph, which is the stuff that actually matters on a proper grand tour. The rear inverter even shares its chipset with the brand’s championship-winning Formula E racer.

The 120kWh pack rides on 850V architecture good for 400 miles of EPA-estimated range, recovering 200 miles in 13 minutes. Stateside cars get a native NACS port, too.

No Rear Window, No Apologies
The proportions stretch 5.2 meters long yet it stands just 1.4 meters tall on standard 23-inch wheels, complete with hidden door handles and frameless glass. Around back, a full-width ribbed panel housing the taillights reminds of a very expensive hi-fi amplifier. And there’s no rear window at all. Drivers will use a ClearSight camera feed that’s perched atop the dash.

Inside, a brass-toned spine runs the length of the cabin, carving out four individual seats wrapped in Kvadrat wool and Ultrafabrics (leather is optional). 24-inch OLED display handles instruments and infotainment, while a separate 7-inch screen covers climate.
