Few nameplates carry the weight the Bonneville does. It’s the bike that quite literally defined 1960s cool (obviously Steve McQueen rode a Triumph), but it’s not a bike that’s ever been cheap by any means. In fact, the T100 currently guards the entry gate at $11,495. Well, it looks like that gate just swung wide open, because Triumph has unveiled the all-new Bonneville T40 and T40 Black.

One Cylinder Short of Tradition
Every Bonneville since 1959 has been a parallel twin, and the T40 runs a 398cc single borrowed from the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X.
Before anyone lights a torch, though, Triumph did do some real work here. The T40 gets its own cylinder head and a dedicated tune that trades the Speed 400’s 39.5 horsepower peak for 30 horsepower and 26.6 lb-ft of torque served up lower in the revs, which is where a Bonneville actually lives.

The Bajaj-built single even sits in an entirely new frame, mounted more upright with a one-piece subframe carrying proper twin shocks. But it’s still everything we know and love about the Bonneville silhoutte, right down to the teardrop tank and single peashooter silencer.

A Sixties Dial With 2027 Brains
The real surprise is the equipment list, because this little roadster manages to out-tech the $11,495 T100. A 4-inch circular TFT serves up full map navigation, phone and music controls, five ride modes, and even a Heritage display theme that mimics an analog speedo, mechanical odometer and all.

Cruise control, cornering ABS, and lean-sensitive traction control are all standard. And with a 31.1-inch seat, a 421-pound wet weight, and 10,000-mile service intervals, it’s about as low-commitment as the Bonneville name has ever been.

Pewter, Phantom, and Hand-Painted Pinstripes
Then there’s the T40 Black, which is the one we’d park in our own garage. Its Matte Pewter Grey and Matte Phantom Black tank is split by a silver coachline that’s still painted by hand, over powder-coated black engine casings, a blacked-out exhaust, and gloss black rims laced with bright steel spokes.
A ribbed brown bench seat rounds out the affair, which is a signature detail shared with the bigger T120 Black. The standard T40 keeps the chrome and brighter two-tone schemes for the traditionalists.
