For the better part of a decade, your first wheel-to-wheel race in a Porsche almost certainly happened in a Cayman. The 718 GT4 Clubsport was the designated gateway drug. It was basically the car you learned in before graduating to the 911s further up the ladder. Well, it looks like that arrangement is now officially dead. Porsche Motorsport has unveiled a new entry-level race car, and this time the very first rung is a 911. Say hello to the new 911 Challenge.

The Cayman Hands Over the Keys
Unfortunately, when Porsche moved its GT4 racing program to the 911-based GT4 R earlier this year, it left the beginner slot wide open. And Porsche couldn’t have that now, could they? The 911 Challenge fills that vacancy.

So, now a driver can start in a Challenge, move to a Cup car, climb into Carrera Cup, and eventually reach the GT4 R and GT3 R without ever having to leave the 911 platform.

Take One GT3, Hold the Particulate Filter
Underneath, this is essentially a 992.2-generation 911 GT3 road car. The naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six carries over, still rips to 9,000 rpm, but now breathing through race pipes and pumping out 508 ponies.
The 7-speed PDK sticks around too, which runs the GT3’s short gearing. Then the race hardware piles on heavy for the track. A welded roll cage, a 110-liter FIA fuel cell, 380mm steel brakes, a three-stage adjustable anti-roll bar, air jacks, and performance slicks wrapping 18-inch wheels.

Nannies Optional, A/C Standard
Porsche did decide to keep some creature comfortable including the adjustable ABS, traction control, ESC, and torque-vectoring diff. The goal was to allow rookie drivers a safety net to continue learning, and then dial it away as they get faster. Porsche even even kept the air conditioning.

The carpet, sound deadening, airbags, and passenger seat weren’t so lucky – which is not too surprising. Curb weight lands around 3,197 pounds, though that figure includes 40 pounds of ballast riding shotgun.
