BMW’s Carbon-Clad M 1000 RS is Officially The World’s Most Powerful Hypernaked

Every superbike owner eventually hits the same breaking point (usually about an hour into a canyon run). All that power is intoxicating but the riding position, well…let’s just say much less so. BMW Motorrad clearly gets it, because the brand showed up to EICMA this week with a machine that keeps every last bit of the firepower and throws the crouch (and the fairings) in the bin. Meet the limited-run BMW M 1000 RS.

When RS Meant Rennsport

On today’s BMWs, the RS badge lives on comfy sport-tourers like the R 1300 RS, shorthand for “Reise-Sport,” or travel and sport. But the letters started life meaning something a lot more performance oriented.

Rennsport (literally translating to “racing sport”), adorned machines like the supercharged pre-war RS 255 Kompressor and the 1954 RS 54 Grand Prix racer. The M 1000 RS brings that original definition back to the forefront, with “M 1000 Rennsport” lettering stamped right on its blacked-out subframe. And the hardware underneath is everything we were hoping to see.

A WorldSBK Heart, Uncaged

So let’s talk about the number everyone came for. BMW pulled the 999cc ShiftCam inline-four from the M 1000 RR (the homologation special that won the brand a World Superbike title), and bolted it into the naked chassis in full RR tune.

The result is a frankly absurd 218 horsepower at 14,500 rpm and 83 lb-ft of torque, moving a bike that weighs just 432 pounds with a full tank. For context, Ducati’s Streetfighter V4 S previously topped the hypernaked food chain with a claimed 214 horsepower.

The RS rips to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and runs out of road at 176 mph. It is worth mentioning though that US-bound bikes get trimmed to 205 horsepower thanks to EPA noise regulations.

Superbike Parts, No Superbike Crouch

Underneath, the RS starts as an M 1000 R with the M Competition package, then borrows just a bit from its faired sibling. The M 1000 RR donates its milled rider footrests and entire tail section, while the seat climbs 20mm to load up the front tire.

A full titanium M exhaust shaves 3.5 pounds, matte carbon winglets with RS lettering handle downforce duty, and M Carbon wheels with Brembo Stylema stoppers round out the rolling stock. Toss in a brushed aluminum tank, an Alcantara-look M seat, and a “1 of 1,000” plaque on the triple clamp, and you’ve got arguably the most special roadster Munich has ever signed off on.
