The Ineos Grenadier Trialmaster X Merges Hardcore Off-Road Gear with Daily Driver Comfort

Make no mistake, we love the Grenadier. But we also understand that up until now, the Grenadier lineup has forced a pretty annoying decision on buyers. You could either go full send with the Trialmaster which is equipped with locking diffs, all-terrain tire, and really, the works. Or you can opt for the cushier Fieldmaster with its heated leather and creature comforts, perfect for city dwellers.

Both models are solid, of course, but picking one meant giving up the other – until now, that is. Enter the Trialmaster X, a new range-topper that should fix the problem by giving you both.

The Off-Road Half of the Equation

Underneath the nicer trimmings, the Trialmaster X is still very much a serious off-roader. You’re getting front and rear locking differentials, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3s wrapped around 17-inch alloys, an integrated front winch, and a high-load electrical prep system for whatever accessories you want to bolt on later.

One quick clarification worth making: that tube running up the A-pillar isn’t a true snorkel. The engine bay and electronics aren’t sealed for deep water fording, so think of it more as an air intake relocated up top to keep dust and grit out of the engine in nasty environments. It’s certainly useful, but don’t go ripping through a river expecting to come out clean on the other side.

The Fieldmaster Half

Inside the off-roader, the cloth Recaros have been swapped out for heated leather seats, the cabin’s been treated with carpet floor mats to help cut down on road noise, and a premium audio system has replaced the standard setup.

Throw in safari windows up top, privacy glass, and a lockable storage box built into the spare wheel carrier, and you’ve got a Grenadier that feels much more comfortable, but still with that Ineos mechanical charm we love. The rear-mounted ladder is a nice touch too.

The B58 Connection

Power, as with every other Grenadier, comes from BMW’s 3.0-liter turbo inline-six. US buyers get the gas B58 making 332 lb-ft of torque, while European customers can also opt for the B57 diesel and its meatier 406 lb-ft delivered way down low in the rev range. Either way, it’s running through an eight-speed automatic and a Tremec transfer case with a 2.5:1 low-range ratio.

The LeTech portal-axle Grenadier still remains the hardcore option, but it’ll run you somewhere around $200,000. The Trialmaster X gets you many of the same of the off-road goodies in a daily driver for less than half that price tag.
