Bugatti has spent the past couple of years telling us the W16 story is finished. The Mistral got the farewell tour, the Tourbillon kicked off the V16 era, and we all made our peace with it.
But inside Molsheim’s Programme Solitaire, where a single client’s checkbook can rewrite the rules, the old quad-turbo 8.0-liter simply refuses to stay retired. Say hello to the Bugatti Destrier, a one-off that turns the track-only Bolide into something else entirely.
Take the Bolide, Delete the Aero
The Bolide is quite possibly the most unhinged machine Bugatti has ever built. Roughly 1,578 horsepower, around 3,100 pounds, 236 mph, and enough wings and ducts to make an LMP car blush.
The Destrier’s design brief essentially asked what those extreme proportions would look like with all of it stripped away. The answer is a car standing just one meter tall (39.4 inches), the lowest Bugatti ever, riding on 20- and 21-inch wheels versus the Bolide’s 18s.
The body pinches into a dramatic waist behind the doors before flaring back out over the rear hips. And the bespoke Sapphire Celeste paint carries actual diamond-inspired sparkle within its structure.
Molsheim Has Done This Before
If one chassis birthing two totally different cars sounds familiar, it should. Bugatti’s prewar Type 57 platform underpinned both the Le Mans-winning Tank racers of 1937 and 1939 and the 57SC Atlantic, the car plenty of people still call the most beautiful ever made.
The Destrier leans into that lineage hard. A hand-engraved plate above the windshield depicts both cars, and the blue paint nods to the famed “Pope” Atlantic, which originally wore blue before its current owner went black.
Haute Couture, but Make It 1,578HP
Now, the cabin. Gone is the Bolide’s fire-extinguisher-and-fireproof-underwear vibe, replaced by warm “Ambre Voyageur” leather and nubuck, plus a 3D-knitted textile threaded with actual copper yarn.
Hammered metal covers the steering wheel hub, vents, and door handles, a wink at medieval armor (Destrier being the warhorse knights rode into battle). And Bugatti buried the full 1,600 PS W16 at the bottom of its own announcement, offered “almost in passing.”

Pricing & Availability
Bugatti hasn’t disclosed what the Destrier’s owner paid, though Autocar pegs Solitaire commissions well into eight figures. Not that it matters, since this one-of-one is already spoken for. The rest of us can catch it in person at The Quail on August 14 and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 16.
