Airstream Shrinks the Silver Bullet Into a 17-Foot Trailer Your Crossover Can Tow

Everybody wants an Airstream. Far fewer people want the heavy-duty pickup required to lug one around, or the six-figure invoice that usually comes attached to those big riveted twin-axle rigs. That gap is exactly what the World Traveler line was built to close when it launched back in January, and Airstream is now doubling down with the World Traveler 17RB, the smallest and lightest member of the family.

No Truck Required

Let’s get right to the number that matters: 3,150 pounds. That’s the 17RB’s curb weight. And with a GVWR of just 3,500 pounds, this Airstream weighs roughly the same as a Golf GTI.

The practical upshot? Crossovers, compact SUVs, and unibody pickups all become viable tow rigs. No trading in the daily driver for a diesel dually just to get the family to the campsite.

Classic Shell, Clever Packaging

Outside, it’s all familiar Airstream. You get the riveted aluminum body, dual-pane acrylic windows, and a manual awning out front. The roofline sits noticeably lower than usual, though, because Airstream tucked the A/C and the Truma heating unit beneath the dinette bench rather than bolting them up top.

Inside, the Scandinavian-inspired cabin crams a shocking amount into 17 feet. There’s a convertible dinette up front and a 53-inch-wide bed for two in the rear, with the galley splitting the difference. Airstream even found room for a proper wet bath, toilet and shower included.

Now, about that galley. It packs a two-burner stove, a sink, and a 2.1-cubic-foot fridge/freezer, and when counter space runs out (it will), a fold-out extension and a removable bedside add-on pick up the slack.

The Off-Grid Upcharge

Standard kit includes a 24-inch smart TV, ducted air conditioning, and hot water courtesy of that Truma Combi system. But the options list is where things get interesting.

A 200W rooftop solar setup paired with a 2.5kWh lithium battery package turns the 17RB into a legitimate off-grid basecamp, while a microwave, backup camera, and dinette drawer fridge round out the affair.
