While its aluminum camping trailers have long since stood for the spirit of exploration on American highways, Airstream actually began with wooden models in the late 1920s when Wally Byam built units in his Los Angeles backyard and sold how-to kits for customers looking to make their own. Less than a decade in, Byam pivoted to the iconic aluminum models that his brand would become synonymous with. And today, there are many companies that strive for that same emotional resonance, although few ever come close.
However, as RV culture evolved, so has Airstream. Still known for its formidable metal trailers, the brand introduced its smaller Basecamp series nearly two decades ago, even though it took a while for it to catch on. Airstream nevertheless kept at it, doubling down on the idea and eventually earning the trust of solo campers and small families who just wanted to road trip without shelling out for a hotel every night. With its 2026 Basecamp 16x, the company will now make it easier to go anywhere and everywhere.

The Legacy Behind the Tiny Footprint
The original Basecamp actually had a rough start. Developed with Nissan Design America, the 2007 model sold only around 200 units in its initial run, which are modest numbers by any measure. But Airstream kept the concept alive, and what was once a niche idea gradually grew into a legitimate product line. Airstream traces the Basecamp’s vision back to Wally Byam’s Torpedo concept from the 1930s, which explains the model’s entire design philosophy: small, purposeful, and built to go where the adventure is.

A Pocket Rocket With Standard-Issue Off-Road
For 2026, Airstream made a move that its most devoted Basecamp customers will appreciate, with the previously optional X-Package now standard across both floorplans. That means the off-road-friendly 16x (along with the larger 20x) ships from the factory with a 3-inch suspension lift, rock guards, Goodyear all-terrain tires on aluminum wheels, and solar front window protection. At 16.2ft bumper-to-ball and 2,700 lbs dry weight, it’s also one of the most tow-friendly trailers Airstream has ever built. A lot of existing SUVs and mid-size trucks will handle it without any upgrades.

Smart Inside a Small Box
The layout places the galley at the front of the trailer, where a wrap-around kitchen takes full advantage of panoramic glazing, a smart design choice that keeps the small space from feeling claustrophobic. The two-burner gas cooktop, 12V refrigerator with freezer, and optional microwave give you everything you need after a long day on trail. Overhead cabinets were ditched in favor of netted ceiling compartments, which actually frees up vertical space and reinforces that aeronautics-ish aesthetic Airstream does so well.

In the rear, the face-to-face bench dinette converts into a full double bed, or you can convert just one side and keep the other as a lounge, or clear the tables out entirely to haul bicycles, surfboards, or anything else that won’t fit through a standard RV door. The rear hatch loading design remains one of the Basecamp’s most practical features and still sets it apart from competitors. The wet bath features a foot-flush toilet, handheld shower wand, and a nifty pass-through that lets you rinse off outside without tracking water through the cabin.

One place where the 16x still asks you to compromise is the bedroom setup. The bed conversion requires removing and storing slats, which is a minor hassle Airstream’s competitors have mostly solved. It’s a small criticism, but still worth noting.
