Upon debuting the 720S in 2017, McLaren set the bar pretty high. It was not only lighter than the outgoing 650S but faster, with a top speed of 212mph and shaving 0.1 seconds off the already-impressive 0-to-60 time of 3 seconds. Today, the British marque has unveiled the replacement for the 720S sports car — named the 750S — and it’s quite impressive.
Promising to be the final McLaren model powered entirely by internal combustion, the 750S bests its predecessor in essentially every way, and it’s not even close. Not only does it now lead its segment in power-to-weight ratio at 579hp-per-ton but the 750S is now the lightest and most powerful production car that McLaren has ever made. Trading in the 710-hp, 568lb.ft of torque from the 720S, the coupe uses the same 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine to ramp up the performance to 740hp and 590lb.ft of torque. McLarens have always been towards the top in terms of acceleration, but these updates have now given it a 0-to-60 time of just 2.8 seconds!
With about 30% of the components either new or changed compared to the outgoing model, the 750S achieves its 2,815-pound dry weight — 66lbs lighter than its predecessor — thanks to its carbon fiber monocoque construction. The car also sheds weight by using carbon fiber for its racing seats and active rear wing structure, as well as the brand-new 10-spoke ultra-lightweight forged wheels, which are the lightest standard wheels for any production McLaren ever. If you opt for the Spider variant, you’ll also get a carbon fiber upper with a composite Retractable Hard Top. As for the interior, McLaren has added USB-A and USB-C chargers to go along with the addition of Apple CarPlay. Likewise, the entire experience is more driver-friendly altogether, with the Active Dynamic controls now on the driver’s instrument panel so he can adjust the drivetrain and chassis settings much easier. And with the new McLaren Control Launcher, you can access saved presets next time around.
