Debuting in 1963 with the C2 Corvette models, the performance-focused Z06 was initially developed in secret amidst the AMA ban on factory-supported racing. While popular among collectors and enthusiasts, the Z06 didn’t show up again for nearly 40 years until the fifth generation of the sports car in 2001. It’s been a staple in the line ever since.
For the C8 Corvettes, which feature a mid-mounted engine for the first time since the introduction of the nameplate in ‘53, the Z06 was again reintroduced for the 2023 model year. Now, Chevy has pulled the cover off the track-ready GT3 version of the homologation car ahead of the IMSA SportsCar Championship next year. This is the first time a race car from the marque has met FIA regulations for GT3s.
In collaboration with Pratt Miller Engineering, GM’s Competition Motorsports Engineering division used an aluminum chassis on which a purpose-built steel roll cage was assembled. Striking in appearance, the exterior coat is mostly charcoal gray with yellow accents and yellow trim. Although no specific specs have been revealed, the GT3.R is powered by a slightly modified version of the 5.5L V8 from the production Z06.
