First held in Prescott, Arizona more than a decade ago, the Overland Expo is now a multi-event annual tradeshow that showcases the latest and greatest parts, gear, and accessories from the off-road, overland, camping, and expedition segments. In addition to organizing the East, West, PNW, and MTN West events, the team behind the Overland Expo has also started a new tradition of preparing what it calls the “Ultimate Overland Vehicle” for each year’s shows — a practice the team has now repeated for a second year.
Coming on the heels of last year’s build — a heavily-kitted TRD Off-Road-Spec Toyota 4Runner — this year’s Ultimate Overland rig is based on a new GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X and features an even more impressive slew of aftermarket items. Off-road-focused upgrades include a Rhino-Rack Pioneer platform, Rigid Adapt XP lights fixed to the project’s A-pillars and roof rack, a Rhino-Rack Sunseeker 2.0 awning, Go Treads traction boards, a Safe Jack bottle jack, a Forrest Tool Max Tool Kit, a Midland MXT575 GMRS radio, a ZOLEO Satellite Communicator, a weBoost cell signal booster, ICON 17” alloy wheels shod in 33” Firestone Destination M/T2 tires, and a Viair’s Expedition onboard air system that can be used to inflate tires or power the rig’s rear axle’s Firestone Ride-Rite air springs — all of which were professionally installed by the crew over at King County, Washington’s MULE Expedition Outfitters.
In place of the donor’s stock bed is a 6.4’ tray from MITS Alloy North America with a 3’ canopy, an eight-gallon water tank, multiple side-mounted storage bins, and a full-length drawer that extends out from under the back of the flat-bed tray. In addition to a Green Goat Outdoors camp kitchen, a Geyser Systems camp shower, and a two-person 23 ZERO Outbreak 1550 Swag ground tent, the canopy also houses a dog box, a custom solar panel system, a REDARC RedVision Manager30, and a pair of Battle Born lithium-ion batteries that power the overlander’s DOMETIC CRX 110 fridge. The project also retains the AT4X’s advanced four-wheel-drive system with front and rear electronically locking differentials, Multimatic DSSV spool-valve suspension dampers, and 420-hp 6.2-liter V8 — though the engine has been treated to a cat-back MagnaFlow performance exhaust system.
After completing its rounds at the various Overland Expos this year, this thoroughly-kitted Sierra 1500 AT4X will be auctioned off on Bring a Trailer, with 100% of the proceeds from the sale going to the Overland Expo Foundation charity.
