A great many of us grew up building scale model kits, though no longer partake in the hobby today. There are, however, a handful of individuals that never gave up the pastime, amassing decades of experience that enables them to deliver builds with incredible levels of realism. One such person works under the banner of “Scale-a-ton,” churning out extremely lifelike kits and documenting the elaborate process on his YouTube channel and blog.
Scale-a-ton’s latest work is based on a 1971 BMW 2002tii model kit — a 1:24-scale Hasegawa item from the Japanese brand’s Historic Car Series — though it’s been supplemented with several highly-detailed specialty sets from Ukraine’s USCP, including a powertrain and engine bay kit, an interior door panel set, a resin hood, replica 14″ Alpina wheels, and a three-spoke steering wheel set. Scale-a-ton has meticulously pieced together this kit of the 2002tii — the fuel-injected version of the two-door that packed an additional 25hp — before making a myriad of custom tweaks and then bestowing it with a wildly realistic paint job that includes expertly-applied faux wear and patina just as it would appear on an actual car. Alongside the ridiculously realistic scale model 2002, the builder has also whipped up a miniature scale garage to house it that also sports a slew of extremely lifelike details and even mini scale accessories like air compressors, jacks, and jerry cans.
