One such innovation is McIntosh’s Hybrid Drive, which combines the richness of a vacuum tube amplifier with the power of a solid-state amp by splitting up the audio signal before feeding the mids and highs to the former and the lows to the latter. A few weeks ago, McIntosh unveiled the new MC451 Dual Mono Amplifier, which implements its Hybrid Drive tech into a smaller, more compact unit compared to its previous MC901, cutting both the vacuum tube and solid state wattage in half (150W and 300W, respectively) and the weight down by 47lbs. Additionally, the footprint of the new unit is roughly 1sq.ft smaller than its predecessor.
