When it comes to black-and-white photography, Leica’s cameras are the masters of the realm. The German company has produced a stellar line of professional-caliber cameras that blend both form and function. In particular, the Q2 Monochrom has raised the already high bar for black-and-white cameras that Leica has set. Now, Leica is giving the famed Q2 and Q2 Monochrom a rugged overhaul by releasing a Reporter Edition for both cameras.
As the name implies, the Q2 and Q2 Monochrom Reporter Edition are built tough enough to hold up to the rigors of field journalism and offer a rugged and minimalistic design that is both discrete and elegant. Though it was made to keep a low profile, the camera’s beauty is still unmistakable. Furthermore, the Reporter Edition Q2 and Q2 Monochrom sport a dapper wrap of woven Kevlar “body armor,” which provides an extra layer of durability for the camera, as well as a nice textural contrast to its matte olive green body. This “body armor” enhances the grip of the camera while also giving it a layer of defense from chemical and thermal hazards. The specific pattern of Kevlar featured on the Q2 and Q2 Monochrom is also spun so tightly that it’s virtually impossible to unravel. Over time, exposure to light will change the Kevlar’s color until it matches the dark olive green color of the body. What’s more, both cameras come with a highly scratch-resistant finish on their bodies to better protect against dust and water infiltration. While their bodies are virtually identical, the Leica Q2 Monochrom Reporter features discreet “MONOCHROM” lettering on the lower edge of its display.
The cameras retain their same 47-megapixel full-frame sensors, integrated zoom functions, and locking elements that made them one of the best cameras on the market. The Leica Q2 Reporter will be available at specialty retailers on December 9, while the Q2 Monochrom will arrive in March 2022.
