Somewhere in every gear closet sits a perfectly good hatchet that never makes the pack. It’s heavy, it rides awkwardly, and the head cover is always one river crossing away from vanishing forever.
So, naturally, it stays at home. Danish knife designer Mikkel Willumsen thinks there’s a better answer, and it takes the form of the Norse Foldable, a camp axe that folds shut like a pocket knife.
The Pocket Axe Has Precedent
Now, a folding axe isn’t unheard of. CRKT beat everyone to the punch with the Provoke X, a tool we’ve covered and reviewed, which brought Joe Caswell’s patented Kinematic mechanism from the Provoke karambit into axe territory. Flick your wrist and the head morphs out of the handle, secured by CRKT’s Deadbolt lock. It’s a legitimately brilliant piece of engineering.
But the Provoke X is a tactical tool at heart, with a 1.84-inch edge, a rear spike, and a $350 price tag. The Norse Foldable takes the other road entirely, borrowing its architecture from the traditional pocket knife and pointing the whole thing squarely at the woodpile.
Folder Hardware, Axe Duty
Read the spec sheet blind and you’d swear this was a premium EDC folder. Ball-bearing pivot. Crossbar lock. Skeletonized G10 scales in black or OD green, a steel pocket clip, even a thumb hole cut into the head.
Except none of that hardware is tending to a dainty drop point. The crossbar lock seats a full axe head rigidly in line, a secondary safety catch keeps it there through every swing, and spring tension holds everything shut in your pack. Pre-production units already made the rounds at this year’s Blade Show, where the lock got cycled thousands of times without complaint.
An Actual Edge, Not a Party Favor
Open, the Norse puts a 111mm (4.38-inch) cutting edge on 3.8mm stock, well over double the Provoke X’s bite, ground from Sandvik 14C28N. That steel gets prized in the knife world for toughness and easy resharpening, a smart call for an edge destined to meet knots and the occasional dirt strike.
The PVD coating shrugs off sap and rust, and the whole tool weighs 350 grams, roughly a can of soda and lighter than the CRKT. Folded, it measures under 21cm and slips into a pack pocket, no sheath required.

Willumsen has been designing blades out of Copenhagen since 1998, working its way from custom pieces into a full line of production folders and fixed blades. The Norse Foldable is the studio’s first swing at an axe, and it’s arriving the crowdfunding route with a modest €5,000 goal and stretch tiers that unlock a leather belt sheath and a numbered rune-engraved edition if backers pile in.
