For two decades, The North Face’s Summit Series was the brand’s premium, high-performance collection of alpine apparel and gear engineered for the earth’s most extreme conditions. But in 2020, the California-based icon decided this wasn’t enough, and expanded the series by launching the Advanced Mountain Kit (AMK), a modular system of lightweight climbing gear developed with athlete input over a 3-year R&D period.

Continuing to evolve the collection, TNF recently teamed up with Canadian retail clothing brand Haven for new Black Editions of select AMK pieces, and they’re already looking like monochromatic masterpieces.

A Partnership Built on Pacific Northwest Know-How

Haven has been curating technical menswear since 2006, championing Pacific Northwest utility alongside Japanese craftsmanship. Their in-house label, launched in 2018, focuses on adaptable pieces for urban and outdoor life. It’s a perfect match for the modular AMK. This collaboration distills both brands’ obsession with purpose-driven design into an eight-piece system rendered entirely in black.

The Core Kit

The Summit FUTURELIGHT AMK Jacket anchors the collection as your primary weather shield. TNF’s FUTURELIGHT membrane delivers waterproof breathability, while Spectra ripstop reinforcement balances lighteight propereis with toughness. You also get articulated patterning for mobility, ventilated side panels, and a helmet-compatible hood.

For even colder outings, there’s the Summit CLOUD DOWN AMK Parka, which leverages 1,000-fill ProDown that, unlike standard down fill, has been treated for water resistance. The offset-baffle construction serves as a sort of body-mapping that also improves packability for this large coat. You can pair it with the FUTURELIGHT AMK Ski Pant, which features the same breathable shell construction, along with integrated gaiters to keep out moisture and slush.

Not Just Jackets and Pants

Aside from the clothing pieces, the collection also includes the Advanced Mountain Kit 25L Pack, built with lightweight Dyneema fabric and a modular design that can strip down or expand, depending what you need it to do. Fans of the pack can expect the usualy features, like a dedicated rope carry, ice tool attachments, and a roll-top closure handle. Meanwhile, there’s also a blacked-out version of the Summit Verto SA GORE-TEX boots, which are designed for winter treks and deliver precision fit via BOA adjustment. They’re also equipped with large-lugged Vibram Mont outsoles for deep, slippery terrain.
