Back in 1962, when most bagmakers in Japan were subcontracting their work to other brands, Yoshida & Co. decided to offer more transparency with the launch of its Porter private label (named after the porters who helped carry your hotel luggage). Now, the legendary firm is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a limited-edition collection of the ever-popular Tanker bag line, managing to pay homage to their past while embracing a more sustainable future.

EVERYTHING AND NOTHING CHANGES
Porter’s Tanker series has been an icon in the bag world since 1983, immediately recognizable for its signature nylon construction inspired by MA-1 flight jackets. For this anniversary collection, the brand has embraced its newly adopted slogan, “ALL NEW TANKER: Nothing changes, everything changes,” with an important innovation in its materials.
Featuring seven of Porter’s Tanker bags, the Coyote line boasts a new eco-friendly approach that trades the traditional petroleum-based nylon with 100% plant-based version of the fabric, along with taffeta lining inside. Marking a significant shift in the Japanese stalwart’s production philosophy from here on out, this (according to the brand) is the first successfully mass-produced bag line to employ this sort of material, hopefully urging its competitors to do the same.

COYOTE CALLS
Regardless of the fabric swap, the bags still retain their usual balance between rugged durability and beautiful sheen that’s made them so popular with EDC enthusiasts for years. A sophisticated neutral shade, the collection’s namesake “Coyote” colorway reminds us of desert tactical gear, but if it had a more refined urban edge. Despite the Tanker’s military-inspired DNA, the silky brown is a nice choice that still allows the subtle luster of the fabric to shine through. Aside from keeping the signature look, Porter has also guaranteed that the bags are just as rugged as they’ve always been.

Limited to 300 units for each style, the collection encompasses seven silhouettes covering every carry scenario you could imagine: a Daypack, Helmet Bag, Square Tote, Sling Bag, Roll Bag, Hip Bag, and Envelope Bag. Each piece features special edition details including a unique serial number tag (a first for the Tanker series) and a unique “Traveling Map” interior pattern, so each bag sports a different map arrangement.

COLLECTOR’S APPEAL
The hardware and branding details have also received special treatment, from the PORTER name tag to all the antique brass-looking metal components (although the brand hasn’t specified what type of metal it is). Rounding out the jubilee, each style also comes packaged in a dedicated drawstring bag featuring a 90th anniversary tag. While quality EDC bags are always designed with utility in mind, the Coyote range nevertheless consists of solid collector’s pieces that honor an indisputable legend in the space.
