Launched by Porsche in 1972, right in the midst of the marque’s legendary motorsports heyday, Porsche Design is largely known for its flagship Chronograph 1 (and inaugural release) but has a history of products ranging from sunglasses to headphones to even luggage. However, the design studio’s latest suitcase collection goes aluminum for the first time, taking inspiration from one of Stuttgart’s most iconic designs, drawing aesthetic and engineering cues from the 911 Targa.

Targa-Inspired Travel
Taking after the Targa’s brushed aluminum roll bar, which revolutionized convertible design upon its introduction in 1965 by being the first made from brushed aluminum, the Roadster Aluminum collection comes in three sizes: a carry-on friendly 40L option and a 72L and 102L checked bag options. For the job, the company looked to Italian luxury luggage brand BRIC’S for assistance.
Favoring a cleaner and more sophisticated profile than your typical aluminum bag, the collection ditches visible hardware like rivets or traditional corner joints. Instead, it relies on its stamped exterior panels attached to a stabilized frame, which immediately catch the eye with their horizontal lines on both front and back. Directly referencing the aerodynamics of the 911, the suitcases certainly evoke Porsche’s curvaceous, flowing design ethos.
According to Porsche Design, the shells are designed to develop a unique patina over time, “just as the mileage of a car tells the story of unforgettable road trips.” But for those wanting a stealthier look, the bags will also be available with black shells.

Engineering Excellence in Every Detail
For this collection, Porsche Design didn’t just slap their branding on some aluminum boxes and copy what other travel brands have done already. Sure, you get category mainstays like the well-engineered ergonomic handle system with customizable height adjustments. However, features like the silent and smooth 360-degree ball-bearing wheels get unique touches, taking design cues from classic Carrera rims.
Likewise, the flat TSA locks have been preset to “911” and integrate seamlessly into the minimalist design, while the leather handles feature visible stitching and padding, serving both aesthetics and comfort. There’s even a satisfying tactile experience built into the opening and closing mechanism where the two snap clasps produce a sound intended to match the distinctive “thunk” of a Porsche driver’s door closing.

Interior Organization That Works
Inside, the cases feature a hexagon-print polyester lining that references Porsche’s distinctive design language. The right side houses a spacious main compartment with a zippered divider and integrated slip pocket, while the left side offers an open compartment with cross straps and a practical packing plate.
Each suitcase also includes a foldable bag for separating dirty clothing, which is crucial for longer trips. While not as revolutionary as the exterior design, this interior configuration delivers exactly what frequent travelers need without trying to reinvent the wheel.
