Camping in a two-story facility isn’t impossible in our modern world, but it also isn’t done too often in a way that resembles traditional camping. There are certainly plenty of rooftop tents with pass-through compartments to your tailgate or trunk below. And then, of course, you have cabins and the like. However, when it comes to an actual camping tent, a double-decker facility isn’t something you really see in the wild.
Well, Nokken is setting out to change all that. The company made waves a couple of years ago when it promised customers a customizable outdoor cabin experience with a modular mindset. And now, in partnership with urban architect firm Bjarke Ingels Group (who, earlier this year, unveiled its plans for the A’s new ballpark in Las Vegas to much acclaim) on the design, Nokken has now made a two-story softshell camping tent with a design worth showing off.

Nokken x BIG NKN-Softshell Tent Basics
About the same size as their “micro hotel suite” NKN-18 cabin model, the NKN-Softshell tent covers 195sq.ft across its lower level and is built with lightweight timber framing and Spanish-made weather-resistant fabric canvas in three different color options: Desert Tan, Charcoal, and Khaki. With the optional Upgrade Pack, its loft can be equipped with an upper net for either hammock lounging or storage, and can be accessed via a ladder.
But don’t think you can just purchase one of these double-deckers and throw it in the back of your truck to haul to the campsite. Nokken says these are “semi-permanent” structures. On the other hand, they are designed to be “easily transported and assembled in remote locations while providing the stability and aesthetic appeal of a permanent building.” The company also makes it known that this unit is sustainably built for the eco-conscious adventurer.

What Else Does It Come With?
While we know the base model comes with a bed frame and base plate, Nokken has implied future customization options, as a modular capability is what they had in mind when conceptualizing the NKN-Softshell to begin with. These options include the aforementioned Upgrade Pack but also insulation and a fireplace, among other things. The images online also show a design-forward bedside lamp and nightstand, as well as overhead lighting.
When registering your interest, Nokken gives you the option to select what you will be using the NKN-Softshell for, such as personal use, business use, Airbnb, etc. And as the pictures show us, these tents will look good in a little community for any entrepreneurs looking to start up a new business. Personally, it reminds me of the Route 66 favorite Wigwam Motels where you can spend the night inside a concrete tepee with livable amenities.
