The past decade has been good for LEGO builders and fans in general. While the Danish building blocks company has been around for some 90 years, recent vintage has seen a preponderance of new releases that have rivaled any in the company’s history. Not only are we seeing more ambitious and outside-the-box sets coming from LEGO but improved versions of previous releases as well. The latest in this is the Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole as part of the LEGO Icons series. But how is this an improvement on past iterations and what’s so special about LEGO Icons in the first place?
Icons Vs. Technic
Some fervent fans may be wondering why the iconic Lamborghini Countach 500 Quattrovalvole is getting an Icons release rather than a Technic one. Well, first, let’s break down the difference. Debuting in 1977, LEGO’s Technic series began as a way to challenge builders with more intricate models, many times featuring more sophisticated components. Mostly relegated to automobiles these days, the Technic sets have often included interactive motors with working pistons and other powered features that may replicate the experience of an actual automobile.
While true motorheads might love a Technic version of the legendary Italian wedge car, the Countach truly belongs in the Icons series, following a line of popular sets that includes the Land Rover Classic Defender 90, the Porsche 911, and even movie cars such as the Delorean from Back to the Future and the ECTO-1 from Ghostbusters. When it first launched in 1974, the Countach would become a progenitor of the Italian wedge style that would pervade the next decade or so. This eventually led to the debut of the Countach 5000QV in 1985, an enigmatic 5.2-liter vehicle that had 4 valves per cylinder.
LEGO Icons Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole Basics
A true in-scale replica, the new Icons Countach 5000QV is an 18+ set (meaning, it’s for adults) and boasts a whopping 1,506 pieces in total. Major features include a detailed cockpit with working steering, emblematic scissor doors, and a trunk and hood that actually open. Inside the latter, you’ll see the highly detailed V12 engine replica. You also get period-accurate deep-dish rims, taillights, and rear spoiler. Colored in white, the car measures 13” long, 3.5” high, and 6” wide.
Not the First LEGO Countach Build
The latest Icons Countach is a far cry from the version of the car that was released as part of the Speed Champions series back in 2022. Measuring just 6” long, that model featured just 262 pieces and cost just $20.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this sort of discrepancy from LEGO. A couple of years ago, the iconic Delorean from Back to the Future got a major upgrade, transforming its super-simplified set from 2014 into a 1,872-piece Icons set for adults.
