During a budget vacation in Europe, Tim Leatherman realized there wasn’t a versatile, pliers-based gadget on the market, and developed the original Pocket Survival Tool (PST). For the past 40 years, Leatherman has been dominating the multi-tool arena, with now an array of models for different scenarios. However, it recently ventured into the premium knife category with its debut collection of five blades, aiming to dominate a second time. Leading the pack is the Pioneer, a fixed blade designed for the outdoors. Let’s take a look at just how useful it will be for your next excursion in the wild.

Whether you’re a bushcraft enthusiast or just trying to survive off the grid, the Pioneer will serve you well. Built with a full-tang 5-inch CPM MagnaCut blade for corrosion resistance and edge retention, the sledgehammer of a knife features an imposing, angular Japanese tanto-style shape with a flat saber grind that’s great for prying, digging, chopping, or batoning.

Available in Alpine and Orange Pop, the G10 scales help create an overall balance to the knife, weighing 8.3oz (12oz with the sheath) with a 10-inch overall length. Long enough to give you plenty of space between your hand and what you’re making contact with, the handle is also oiled and textured for superb grip, even if it gets wet. Likewise, the spine features jimping for additional ergonomics while also doubling as a ferro rod striker.

Attaching to your belt, it comes with a hybrid sheath made from Kydex and full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather. Meanwhile, the butt of the handle has a lanyard hole for attaching a cord for quicker access. Like all of Leatherman’s products, every component of the Pioneer (knife and sheath) is made right here in the USA.

Priced at $300, the Pioneer fixed blade is now available from Leatherman’s website.
