While boxcutters and utility knives have existed for generations, the overall design of these items has changed very little since their initial inception. In a bid to modernize the segment — and deliver a markedly more everyday carry-friendly take on the product space — Portland-based gear purveyor Gerber has conjured up an ultra-pocketable model that redefines what it means to be a utility knife.
Known as the Gerber Prybrid, this EDC item leans heavily into the “utility” aspect in its monicker. Just 1.25” wide and spanning only 4.25” in length, the Prybrid is crafted around a steel frame cloaked in rugged and grippy G-10 handles. The “show side” of the utility knife sports a cutout in its G-10 handle that makes room for a locking thumb-slider that allows the Prybrid to effortlessly deploy or retract its replaceable utility blade.
It doesn’t end there, however, as the handle and utility knife on the Prybrid act as a platform that Gerber has used to integrate a myriad of additional tools and functions. On top of the retractable utility blade, the Prybrid also boasts a cord-cutting notch, a small flathead driver, a large flathead driver, and a wire stripper. At the opposite end from where the Prybrid’s utility blade deploys is also a stainless steel pry bar tool that packs an integrated nail puller and a bottle opener — items that afford the outdoor and EDC item even more utility and functionality. This entire suite of tools comes in a compact and lightweight package that tips the scales at less than 3oz, too.
