When it came out way back in 1870, Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was a revolutionary work of fiction, the likes of which had never before been penned. Not only did it help catapult the science-fiction genre into the mainstream and solidify Verne as a legendary author, but it also introduced people — most for the first time — to the mysteries of the deep sea. This included, perhaps most significantly, the appearance of a giant squid amongst its pages. It’s the juxtaposition of Verne’s epic novel, its fictional submarine (the Nautilus) and captain (Nemo), and the real creatures on which some of it was based that have inspired this week’s black-and-gold everyday carry loadout.
