Buck’s Definitive American Hunting Knife Finally Gets a MagnaCut Blade

For most of the last half century, the knock on Buck has been the same: gorgeous heritage patterns, but stubbornly basic steel. The brand’s 420HC with its legendary Bos heat treatment does perform far better than the datasheet suggests, but at the end of the day, unfortunately it’s still 420HC.

That’s what makes Buck’s recent habit of slipping serious metallurgy into its old workhorses so fun to watch. The latest (and largest) example is the Buck 2026 Limited Collection, a run of six rare fixed blade builds pulled from all corners of the catalog.

Deep Cuts, Better Metal

The lineup is a solid reimagining of Buck’s archives. The 104 Compadre Camp Knife trades its usual 5160 spring steel for Cru-Wear, a Crucible tool steel prized for toughness and wear resistance, wearing a tungsten Cerakote finish over its full flat-ground 4.75-inch drop point.

The 192 Vanguard, meanwhile, gets a gun blued CPM154 blade dressed up with DymaLux oak scales and brass furniture for a properly old-school look.

The 116 Caper is the runt of the litter, and we mean that affectionately. Its 2 7/8-inch drop point sticks with tried-and-true 420HC under a DymaLux cherrywood handle, and at $125 it is the cheapest of the six.

The Clip Point Contingent

Now, the real headliners. Three of the six wear Buck’s signature clip point profile, starting with the 117 Mini, which is secretly the most interesting build here: a proper factory mashup that mates a 117 Brahma blade (rendered in MagnaCut, no less) to a 102 Woodsman handle in OD green Micarta.

Its sibling, the 117 Brahma, keeps things old school with D2 steel and Buck’s grippy G10-and-rubber SureTouch handle. Both carry hollow-ground 4.5-inch blades, blood grooves, and aluminum guards and pommels.

Then there’s the king of the bunch. The 119 Special has been the default image of an American hunting knife since the WWII era, and this version pairs its 6-inch clip point with black Cerakote-finished MagnaCut, an OD green Micarta grip, and brushed aluminum hardware. Considering Buck’s own custom shop charges a $75 premium just to option MagnaCut on a 119, getting the full limited-run treatment at $250 is a legitimately strong deal.

Every knife in the collection is built in Buck’s Post Falls, Idaho facility, and each comes with a genuine leather sheath and the brand’s lifetime warranty.
