With the ethos of global consumerism aligning itself with sustainability, companies in virtually every forum are racing to cut their carbon footprints and make sustainable products. The footwear industry is no different. A shining example of this eco-first business approach is Allbirds, who has been a standard-bearer in sustainable and ethical sourcing since their inception. The New Zealand-based company channels that philosophy in their most dedicated foray into the outdoor gear space yet with the announcement of their first line of trail running shoes, the Trail Runner SWT.
Like all of their shoes, Allbirds created their Trail Runners with natural fibers. The Trail Runner SWT (Sugar, Wool, Tree) pays off its name by sporting an upper that’s comprised of a blend of eucalyptus tree fiber and merino wool, a Sweetfoam sugarcane midsole, and a natural rubber outsole. Never one to slack in the sustainability realm, Allbirds went as far as making the insole out of a castor bean oil-based foam. The SWT’s upper features a breathable one-piece construction that’s augmented with ripstop protection, which allows for a smoother, comfier fit that will endure the rigors of mountain runs. What’s more, the SWT features all-condition traction that’s akin to what one would find on a mountain bike, as well as a sock-like collar to block pesky pebbles and other debris from infiltrating your shoe. Adding even more support to this stellar shoe is its stabilizing midsole, which will be a welcomed addition for the more flat-footed runners out there.
The SWT went through 10 different prototypes and was tested by 100 runners over 2,109 miles and 285 days, so runners can be sure that the Trail Runners meet the same high standards that made Allbirds the reputable brand they are today. The Trail Runners SWT clocks in at 12.36 ounces per shoe and comes in three different colors: Natural Black, Natural White, and a limited edition red and orange “Diablo.” Priced at $138, the Trail Runners SWT are available now from Allbirds website.
