Adidas Borrowed Mercedes F1 Tech to Keep World Cup Players From Overheating

The 2026 FIFA World Cup just kicked off this week, and anyone who’s spent a July afternoon in Miami, Dallas, or Monterrey knows exactly what these players are walking into. Adidas knows it too, which is why the brand just unveiled the Climacool System, a three-piece cooling rig built to chill players down before they ever touch the pitch.

And in classic adidas fashion, they didn’t develop it for soccer at all.

From the Cockpit to the Pitch

The Climacool System started life as a multi-year project for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, designed to help drivers survive the oven-like conditions inside a Formula 1 cockpit. Adapting it for soccer wasn’t just a quick rebadge job, either.

Adidas spent years testing the system with Manchester United, Juventus, and Arsenal, and used input from both the players and medical staff to help shape the final design. Even small details, like the vest’s new front zip for quicker on-and-off, came directly from that feedback loop.

A Vest Straight Out of the Freezer

The centerpiece is a vest filled with a proprietary gel that gets frozen before use. Worn over the jersey, the gel slowly thaws and pulls heat away from the torso, abdomen, and back.

The accompanying federation jacket is incredibly clever, to say the least. Its airproof construction traps the cold air against the body, which nearly doubles the vest’s cooling effect. Together, the pair can drop core body temperature by 0.9°F and skin temperature by a wild 23.4°F.

Yes, Those Are Frozen Boots

The third piece is a gel-filled overshoe that slips directly over a player’s cleats, and it might be our favorite part of the whole setup. It knocks foot temperature down 3.6°F in just seven minutes, addressing the swelling and overheating that plague players in hot climates.

Crucially, adidas says it does all of this without dulling the foot’s sensitivity. This means dribbling, passing, and shooting should feel unchanged. The system joins the brand’s broader World Cup arsenal alongside the Trionda match ball and the featherweight F50 Hyperfast Evo cleats.
