Everyday Carry: Nemo

When it came out way back in 1870, Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was a revolutionary work of fiction, the likes of which had never before been penned. Not only did it help catapult the science-fiction genre into the mainstream and solidify Verne as a legendary author, but it also introduced people — most for the first time — to the mysteries of the deep sea. This included, perhaps most significantly, the appearance of a giant squid amongst its pages. And while the great cephalopod might have seemed like pure fantasy to even the most well-educated of readers, it actually has some very real counterparts swimming around in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean — including squids of both the giant and colossal varieties, the former of which can grow up to almost 43 feet in length and weigh as much as a ton (and that’s just the largest that’s been recorded). It’s the juxtaposition of Verne’s epic novel, its fictional submarine (the Nautilus) and captain (Nemo), and the real creatures on which some of it was based that have inspired this week’s black-and-gold everyday carry loadout.

And that’s aided by the fact that it features a powder-coated exterior and an etched cephalopod design. Fill it with rum, whiskey, or whatever else and it will never let you down.
