Everyday Carry: Camp Cook

Category: Everyday Carry

Though we could, in theory, survive for weeks without food, we’d rather keep having our three square meals a day. That doesn’t change when we’re out and about amongst the great outdoors. And while trail food can sustain a person without issue, it’s also not exactly our cuisine of choice. That’s why we like to try our hand at campground cooking. Of course, to manage that properly, you’ll also need a few tools to get the job done right. It’s with that in mind that we put together this week’s pocket dump — a loadout of everyday carry gear perfect for all the aspiring camp cooks out there.

Soto Pocket Torch

Small enough to stash in your pocket, this windproof torch can produce a flame of up to 2,300-degrees Fahrenheit for up to 20 minutes straight. All you have to do is supply a standard disposable non-Bic lighter and the Soto will do the rest. It’s perfect for starting your campfire and putting a sear on a steak, as well.

Gerber ComplEAT Camp Cooking Tool

Comprised of four individual, stackable pieces — a spoon, spork, two-sided spatula, and 4-function multi-tool — Gerber’s ComplEAT Camp Cooking Tool is one of the best ways to ensure you’ve got kitchen utensils when you’re out in the wilderness. They can also be turned into tongs to help you get an even cook on all sides of your food and there’s an included lifetime warranty.

Purchase: $26

Stanley Master Flask

If you’re looking to swig your favorite campground whiskey while out on the trails, you’ll definitely want to bring along the Stanley Master Flask. The legendary brand has built this bad boy from solid cold-rolled stainless steel, it has an 8-ounce capacity, the screw-on cap is leakproof, and the whole thing is dishwasher safe.

Purchase: $35

Shun Higo-No Kami Folding Steak Knife

For those not in the know, chef knife-focused brand Shun falls under the same umbrella as both Kershaw and Zero Tolerance. So it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about bladed tools and cutlery. Their non-locking friction folding steak knife is more of the same (in this case, a very good thing), with a 3.5″ VG10 steel blade, and handsome and durable ebony PakkaWood handle.
