As major manufacturers continue their shift toward all-electric lineups and emissions standards grow ever more stringent, the future for petrol-powered classic cars is looking more uncertain now than ever before. In an effort to preserve the appearance, spirit, and character of these vintage machines, a growing number of automotive enthusiasts have turned toward electric powertrain conversions. And such is the case with this BMW 3.0 CSi that’s recently undergone a thorough restoration that included the addition of a Tesla EV powertrain.
Born out of an extensive three-year restoration and EV conversion process, the build began life as a 1975 BMW 3.0 CSi, though not long after leaving the factory would be put into storage where it would sit for the next several decades, taking on rust and water damage. Eventually, the E9 was unearthed, trailered, and taken to a shop for a ground-up restoration. Rather than replacing the donor’s original M30 3.0-liter inline-six, it was decided that the BMW would receive a modern EV powertrain plucked from a late-model Tesla.
The conversion was carried out by Electric Classic Cars, a Wales-based EV conversion specialist founded by engineer, classic car expert, and ex-rally racer Richard “Moggy” Morgan. Equipped with aero elements from the CSL model — also known as the “Batmobile” — this 3.0 CSi has been bestowed with a 335.5-kW (450-hp) electric motor setup from a Model Y Performance that sends 471ft-lbs of instantly accessible torque to the Bimmer’s rear wheels. The entire system draws from a Lithium-ion battery pack arrangement that’s now housed in the car’s engine bay, keeping its weight distribution fairly close to stock.
This Tesla-powered 1975 BMW 3.0 CSI Coupé build is slated to cross the auction block at Bonhams’ upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed sale in Chichester, Goodwood on June 24th, where the electrified “Batmobile” is expected to fetch between £175,000 and £200,000 (~$220,000 to $250,000).
