Shelby Cobras represent some of the most elite and sought-after classic cars in existence, with even non-original replicas fetching surprisingly exorbitant sums. However, of all the Cobras built, there are an elite few that stand above the rest, due to their rarity, competition history, ownership, or a myriad of other factors. One such specimen is this 1965 Shelby Factory Stage III 289 Cobra Dragonsnake that’s scheduled to go under the hammer in January of next year.

On top of being the only Stage III factory-built customer Dragonsnake ever, this CSX2427 specimen is also just one of five factory-built 289 Cobra Dragonsnakes to ever leave the factory. Purchased new in ’65 by one Don Reimer of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, this example was raced extensively, and would ultimately achieve the highest points score in SAAC judging history (though this record would eventually be broken). Touted as “the finest and most correct factory-built Dragonsnake in existence,” this Cobra sports a yellow livery complete with Cobra badging and race numbers. Under the hood, the ’60s-era race car packs a 289ci (4.7L) V8 engine that’s been paired with a four-speed transmission and a set of Weber carbs. What’s more, this example was also brought back to life via a lengthy restoration process, only utilizing new old stock components — a meticulous process carried out by Dave Riley and Steven Juliano.

This 1965 Shelby Factory Stage III 289 Cobra Dragonsnake is slated to cross the auction block at Mecum’s upcoming Kissimmee sale in Florida — an event that’s scheduled to run from January 6th through the 16th.
