As a generation that’s grown up in a world with an electrical grid, phone lines, and internet connectivity, it’s difficult to even conceive of a life completely removed from civilization and the power grid, yet, this is exactly how mankind existed for the vast majority of its time on the planet. And though we’re currently living through the most technologically advanced period ever, it’s become increasingly clear that our immense reliance on technology has the propensity to be a bit of a double-edged sword, as advancements in nuclear weapon development, recent global conflicts, and hackers’ ability to take down major pieces of infrastructure has lead to an uncertain future.
Recognizing this unfortunate reality, the envelope-pushing team over at Vollebak has opted to take a page out of the Boy Scouts playbook, hoping for the best while preparing for the worst by engineering an insanely-hardwearing shell jacket designed for a life off of the grid. In order to deliver the Off Grid Dyneema Shell, Vollebak has developed a special waterproof Dyneema that maintains the advanced construction’s lightweight and highly-durable nature while being completely impervious to the elements. Made in Italy and offering an incredible strength-to-weight ratio, the jacket’s ridiculously rugged, windproof, and tear-resistant poly-Dyneema blend has been fully immersed in a proprietary water repellent treatment.
Intentionally over-engineered, the Vollebak Off Grid Dyneema Shell is pieced together using sealed seams and features an adjustable, peaked, fleece-lined hood, Velcro-secured adjustable cuffs, and two main oversized pockets that are crafted from elastic mesh that are welded to the jacket’s inner lining and outfitted with cord fasteners. There are also two storm flap-protected side pockets secured via waterproof zippers, a waterproof main front zipper closure, and elasticized closures at the hem and waist. Because the jacket was engineered from the ground up for a life totally removed from the grid, the garment is cleaned by hand using a sponge — a must when living without access to today’s washers and dryers. In total, the jacket tips the scales at just 750 grams (or 1.65lbs), too.
Produced in sizes ranging from XS up through XXL, the Vollebak Off Grid Dyneema Shell is available now with pricing set at $995. And, like practically every other Vollebak product, this shell was legitimately engineered to survive several lifetimes of regular use.
