Lumberjacks played a pivotal role in the literal building of America, sourcing a great deal of the raw materials needed to construct the nation. While they didn’t possess chainsaws or trucks, one vital item that practically every lumberjack was armed with — aside from an axe — was a quality, hardwearing flannel. And, while life may have drastically changed since the days of the early American lumberjack of well-over-a-century-ago, there’s still something to be said for these axemen’s go-to garment, as this piece of workwear had to stand up to some of the most hostile terrains and conditions imaginable.
Taking inspiration from these ultra-rugged shirts, Vollebak has returned to the lab to deliver the toughest shirt the innovative brand has ever built. Known as the “Lumbershirt,” Vollebak has created three different versions of the garment, using two different construction methods. The Black edition and Sawdust edition are both crafted from a tough ultra-long-staple cotton that’s markedly stronger than traditional cotton constructions — it’s the same fabric used in the wings of the Wright Brothers’ planes. Vollebak then works some magic on the fabric in Japan, making it even stronger while also increasing its softness. The third Lumbershirt, the Blue edition, is crafted from a mix of uber-rugged CORDURA nylon and chambray, the most classic of workwear materials. It’s the lightest shirt of the bunch, with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, and it both looks and feels like a denim shirt (while being considerably stronger and lighter). The tearproof and abrasion-resistant materials of all three shirts are pieced together using triple-chain-stitched seams in all key stress areas, using more than 80′ of super-thick thread in the creation of each Lumbershirt.
In typical Vollebak fashion, each Lumbershirt has also been treated to a host of subtle yet thoroughly premium details. This includes the use of extremely durable, chip, scratch, and shatter-resistant, corozo nut buttons — which are also reinforced — along with a pair of storm flap-protected and button-secured chest pockets and a set of hidden zippered chest pockets. After being constructed, each Lumbershirt is also bestowed with a special pre-washing process that not only gives it a comfortable, lived-in feel right off the rack but also allows the material to better shape to the unique contours of each wearer’s torso and arms.
The Black, Sawdust, and Blue editions of the Vollebak Lumbershirt are all available now on the brand’s website, with pricing set at $375.
