Nobody knows the outdoors like REI, which is why they’ve held such close ties with Outdoor Afro since the latter’s inception in 2009. Launched in 2021, the organization’s for-profit label, Outdoor Afro Inc., has made strides to connect with the Black community through gear and clothing tailored for an adventurous lifestyle.
Today, the partnership between REI and Outdoor Afro launched its very first collection, a capsule of hiking gear built with both form and function in mind. Highlights from the range include hiking shoes, pants, hoodies, a backpack, and a waist pack. The recycled nylon Flash 22L backpack comes in an attractive black, orange, and seafoam colorway and sports a slim profile despite its plethora of pockets and gear loops. Built from a nylon shell and polyester lining, the Trail 2 Waist Pack is not only stylish but features premium construction and versatility.
The Flash Hiking Boot is made from lightweight yet durable FirmaKnit uppers and a HydroWall to ensure it’s both waterproof and breathable. The TerraGrip with 4mm lugs provide supreme traction no matter the terrain. Available in four attractive colorways, the Fleece Pullover Hoodie provides warmth on the trail without being bulky. Likewise, the microfleece construction allows it to be breathable and fast-drying. Complementing the Hoodie are the lightweight nylon Trail Pants, which are perfect for wetter climates due to their moisture-wicking properties.
Other items in the Outdoor Afro x REI Co-op Collection include shirts, polos, jackets, water bottles, and bandanas. Prices start at $15 and go up to $179.
